Today we had the option of some free time wandering through Santa Catarina Palopo or boating to San Marcos La Laguna for a hike to Jaibalito. We arrived at San Marcos La Laguna and met Josh and Pablo, 2 local guides. Pablo is Kaqchikel Maya and one of the most respected and well known bird experts in the Highlands. It was going to be a good climb to get to the trail head so we all hopped into Tuk Tuks to get us up there quickly. THAT was an experience! On some of the steeper hills, we had to jump out so the tuk tuks could make the climb, then back on again for more fun. It felt like Toad’s Wild Ride!
We hiked along a narrow trail overlooking the lake and hillside cornfields. The view over the lake was spectacular. Pablo stopped us from time to time and spoke about the farms, the farmers’ lives, local birds, and the political history of the area while we snacked on bananas and watermelon.
After a cooling boat ride back and a lunch of (much craved!) pupusas at Panajachel,
we were off to Chichicastenango for Sunday’s market day AND to celebrate Connie’s (one of our Go Learners) birthday!
