“What is unique about you?” Randy asked the group in our first meeting introductions.
Sitting in Randy’s Avenues living room, overlooking the Salt Lake valley and sipping Sicilian wine, we began the unraveling that is acquaintance.
I learned that we have musicians, motorcyclists, adventure travelers, linguists, scientists and survivors who will soon become a second family as we make our way around Sicily.
This is a process I love–not just getting to know each other, but getting to know myself as others make their imprint on me. It’s like travel itself: we enter a land as a stranger, slowly unravel its personality and quirks, and in turn become someone new.
Tonight we ran through logistics and covered packing and safety essentials, but much more than that we took the first step in a journey that will be as unique to each individual as each of our “unique” traits. We will all encounter a different Sicily and come out the other side as a slightly altered version of ourselves.
Cheers to that process, and salute to our group and our upcoming adventures together!
