“When you start on your journey to Ithaca,
then pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge.”
With this excerpt from the Greek poet Cavafy we opened our first day together in Sicily. Many of us had long journeys to finally arrive here, but we all did finally arrive safe and sound.
Randy, Jo Anne and I had the good fortune of timing our premature arrival yesterday with the Festa di Santa Lucia–Siracusa’s festival dedicated to Saint Lucia who was a young Christian martyr from Syracuse thought to have been martyred during Diocletian’s rule.
What that means for today’s community in Syracuse was a grand processional accompanied by marching band and ultimately, fireworks that beat any espresso in knocking the jet lag out of you.
This evening we all reunited in our hotel lobby and kicked off our first evening together over aperitivi and antipastini at “Il Clandestino,” a wine bar specializing in early evening drinks and appetizers.
We rounded out the night with gelato artiginale (home made), delighting in cinnamon, coco, tiramisu and pistacchio flavored ice creams,
Tomorrow, our first full day together, will be an epic walk into Syracuse’s ancient history…and we will be ready with sturdy walking shoes!
